The railway bridge from the Fascist period (1928) is the most spectacular civil work crossing the Mingardo river valley. The majestic eight-arched red bridge immediately leaps out at tourists arriving by car at Palinuro. On the walls of the railway viaduct the Fascist coat of arms stands out in white. The bridge was in use until 1965 and is now one of the high engineering works.
The railway bridge protrudes like a red tongue from the double-pointed cliff on which the ancient medieval village of San Severino di Centola is located. This work of high engineering design was built into the narrowest part of the Mingardo Gorge. Thanks to its strategic position, the bridge was able to withstand the bombardment of Allied aircraft, which tried without success to destroy it during the Second World War.
A destination not only for lovers of trekking, it is still possible to walk along the upper viaduct and enter the brick tunnel for a perfect view of the old village of San Severino di Centola. The railway bridge is now used for initiatives related to the National Day of Forgotten Railways, and the structure has been equipped with lighting that, at sunset, illuminates the outlines of this wonderful bridge that welcomes those passing along the road that runs along the Mingardo River in the direction of Palinuro-Marina di Camerota.
At the foot of this red brick giant, the Mingardo river flows slowly towards the sea at Palinuro. The erosive action of the water along the rocks has caused the formation of several gorges. Although the name suggests something else, it is in the Devil's Gorge that an oasis is located. The Panoria oasis on the banks of the Mingardo river and at the foot of this red Giant becomes a place of tranquillity and silence for a dip in the waters of the Cilento river.
The railway bridge is now being used for initiatives related to the National Day of Forgotten Railways, and the structure has been fitted with lighting which, at sunset, illuminates the outlines of this wonderful bridge, welcoming those travelling along the road along the Mingardo River in the direction of Palinuro-Marina di Camerota.
