A real dive into the nature of Cilento and its history. Among springs, an ancient mill and waterfalls is this small canyon rich in vegetation that has become a WWF protected oasis for the variety of animal and plant species.
The WWF oasis of Morigerati is a beautiful green area that extends along the banks of the karstic river Bussento. It is a WWF oasis since 1995 and a biological protected area for the preservation of biodivesity and valorization of an area composed of 670 acres that you can visit by walking along paths in the nature of Cilento along an easy route from the Centre of Morigerati to the Cave in which the karstic river Bussento springs back to the surface after having flowed through the bowels of the earth. Among the trails in Cilento, the Bussento River Caves Trail is an ancient, easy mule track of just 3 km walkable in 30 minutes, not including stops to admire the karstic canyon, a "geological site" for the significant karstic phenomenon that occurs here. Water is also the real protagonist here, as there are four fountains along the path. Along the way there is the first rising of the Bussento river. You then reach a mill and walk towards the exit of the Oasis. It is inside the Bussento cave that the karstic river finally returns to the surface. In Cilento, the Bussento River, which springs from the southern slope of Mount Cervati, at Caselle in Pittari sinks into a colossal sinkhole to reappear a few kilometres to the south, just under the village of Morigerati. An ancient mill along this path silently watches over the flow of the river. The people living in Morigerati used this water mill to grind the wheat cultivated in this area, where it is no coincidence that in July the Palio del grano is organized, one of the most evocative events in the Bussento area. For the more courageous, it is also possible to take a swim in the cold waters of the river, where farmer's wives used to wash their clothes. An unmissable destination for nature and trekking lovers in Cilento, it is open every day from May to mid-October.
